Lok Sabha lost 65 hours due to adjournments, disruptions during Winter Session

The Lok Sabha lost a significant 65 hours due to adjournments and disruptions during the Winter Session, highlighting the challenges faced by the government in conducting parliamentary business. The opposition parties, including the Congress, have been protesting over various issues such as the Adani bribery case, Manipur violence, and law and order situation in Delhi.¹

The frequent adjournments and disruptions have resulted in limited legislative business being conducted during the session. The Lok Sabha functioned for less than an hour in the first week, while the Rajya Sabha operated for about 75 minutes.² The opposition parties have been demanding a discussion on the Adani bribery case and other issues, but the government has not been able to facilitate these discussions due to the disruptions.

The government has faced criticism for not adequately addressing the issues raised by the opposition parties. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh questioned why the government was not resisting the adjournments, suggesting that the government had something to hide. The frequency of adjournments has raised concerns about the effectiveness and productivity of parliamentary sessions.

The Winter Session of Parliament, which began on November 25, has been marked by protests and disruptions. The session is scheduled to continue until December 20, but it remains to be seen whether the government will be able to facilitate meaningful discussions and legislative business.
