In a surprising turn of events, a thief stole a 100-year-old idol from a temple in Uttar Pradesh’s Basti district, only to return it later with an apology letter.
The idol, made of brass, was taken from the Shiv Temple in Harraiya town on Saturday night. CCTV footage showed a man fleeing the scene with the idol. However, on Sunday morning, temple authorities found the idol back in its original place, along with a handwritten letter.
In the letter, the thief expressed remorse for his actions, stating that he stole the idol under the influence of alcohol. He claimed to have realized his mistake later and felt guilty for hurting the sentiments of devotees.
Temple priest, Ram Kishore Tiwari, said, “We are shocked and relieved by the thief’s change of heart. The letter shows he has some conscience left.” Local police have decided not to file charges, considering the thief’s apology and voluntary return of the idol.
The incident highlights the strong cultural and religious significance of idols in Indian temples, and the power of guilt and remorse in transforming individuals.
